Things Your Upline Didn’t Tell You

If you are, or have been, in a home business then you have probably been given the playbook from your upline.  It may sound familiar:

  • Put together a list of people you know and talk to them
  • Talk to people you meet when you’re out shopping, at a restaurant, etc
  • Hand out company literature twice/day
  • Follow-up
  • Invite to a meeting
  • Sign someone up in your business and train them to do the exact same thing as you
  • Rinse, Repeat

This technique has obviously worked for a great number of people, as network marketing has produced many wealthy individuals.  But the flip side is this cold, hard truth:  97% of network marketers fail. Why do they fail?  The video “Do Most People Fail“  by Tim Sales may shed some light.  Essentially, he talks about those individuals who quit their business.  But let’s dig a little deeper…why do they quit?

In many cases it comes down to training.  These individuals are presented with a terrific business opportunity.  They are told they will have the full support of their upline.  All you need to do is follow their business model and they will help you put more people into your business.

Sadly, this does not happen as often as it should.  And as the weeks turn to months, and the months to years, people become frustrated and quit.  The system that can be “duplicated easily” just did not work for them.  Why?  If a person is truly concerned with making their business work, is willing to put the effort into it, and they are given a system that has worked for others, it should work for them, right?  So tell me again why 97% fail in their network marketing business.

My opinion is this:  The system may be duplicatable, but that does not necessarily mean it will always work for everyone.  The reason is quite simple…people lead different lives.  Not everyone has a multitude of contacts with which to interact.  Not everyone has the time to travel around talking with people.  Not everyone has the courage to approach complete strangers at the grocery store and start a conversation.  Not everyone has the starting cashflow to run advertising campaigns or purchase telephone leads (which, in my humble opinion, are only good for training purposes…but that’s the subject of another post).

So what is a person to do?  Easy.  Find a system that DOES work for you, even if it means going completely against what your upline is telling you.  If you have given their system an honest attempt and just don’t have any success with it, don’t be afraid to go in a different direction.

Instead, play to your strengths.  Join a group, utilize social media like Facebook, shoot videos of yourself and post them on YouTube, write articles and submit them on an article submission sites such as, go to a lecture or seminar, attend a health fair, etc.  Think about what you do really well or spend time doing, and then try to work in into your business.  “Hide not your talents.  They for use were made.  What’s a sundial in the shade?” ~ Ben Franklin.

Personally, I have tried many of these techniques.  Some have been successful, some have not.  I am currently seeing good results from hosting my own video web tour at  Take a look and maybe you can get some ideas. Or maybe the system looks easy enough for you to try.  Regardless, what has worked for me may or may not work for you.  The secret is finding your comfort zone by trying different methods.

Why You Should Have a Newsletter For Your Home Business

Newsletters are an excellent way to stay in touch with your customer base.  Here are just a few reasons why:

  • Your newsletter content can inform your subscribers of new products or services you offer
  • They allow you to stay in touch with your subscribers which keeps you fresh in their minds
  • If you are providing valuable information, they may forward your newsletter to others, potentially increasing your subscriber and customer base
  • Newsletter creation is easy, it can be free advertising, and it can be sent out manually or automatically

Those are just a few of the reasons to start your own newsletter.  And as I said, it’s not that complicated to do.  If you have access to Microsoft Publisher, they have pre-built newsletter templates you can use.  Simply choose one you like and update the content with valuable information for your subscribers.  It is literally as easy as clicking and typing.  Once your newsletter is complete, you can choose to send it out in various email formats, or publish it to a website.

Another method of newsletter creation is to use Aweber.  Signing up for an account is fairly inexpensive and practically pays for itself with the time savings it provides.  Here, you simply setup your email list and again, choose from one of their newsletter templates.  Update the content with your information and save your changes.  You can then schedule the newsletter to be sent out at a date of your choosing.  The advantage here is that you can track who has opened the email or clicked on any links you have included.  You can try it out for free by clicking on the ad found in the bottom right of this blog.

If you do not have access to Publisher or do not want to subscribe to Aweber, don’t fear.  You can use something like Microsoft Word or another type of word processing software to create your newsletter.  The key is to make your newsletter look professional.

Is Direct Selling a Pyramid Scam?

If you have heard the term Network Marketing or MLM, you may associate it as just another pyramid scam. But exactly what IS a pyramid scam?

The definition of a pyramid scam is a business model in which no products or services are actually exchanged. These are illegal, and generally the majority of home business opportunities you see out there do not fall into this category.

But then you may think of a pyramid as being a business model where only the people at the top make all the money while the people at the bottom do all the work and never become as successful as those at the top of the pyramid. Think about this for a moment. The people at the top make the money and the people at the bottom do the work. Does that sound familiar? That’s right…I’ve just described just about every business model in America. From Google to Microsoft, to Ford, to General Electric.

How can that be? Let’s look into it a bit deeper. A corporation is going to have a CEO. I think we can agree on that. And under the CEO there are people who report to him/her. Maybe a CIO and a CFO. And under these people are other individuals who report to them…presidents…then directors, managers, leads, and finally workers.

Does a CFO ever make more money than a CEO? Would a manager make more than a director? How about a worker making sales calls? Would they make more than a manager? Probably not. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce to you the true pyramid scam in America: Corporate America.

Now, how does something like network marketing or direct selling compare? Yes, it’s true that there is an organizational structure very similar to a corporation. There needs to be structure. However, the difference (and it’s a big one) is that people are generally rewarded for the effort they put into their business. In this structure, it is entirely possible for someone towards the bottom of the “pyramid” to make as much or more than their upline.

It all depends upon the effort one puts into their business and how successful they are in their business. Do 97% of network marketers fail? Yes. But in most of these instances, it is a result of either not being trained correctly or not being dedicated to their business, expecting to get rich very quickly.

The main thing to remember with a direct marketing business is that it IS a business. It is not a “get rich quick” scheme. Just like any other business, it takes effort and an expendiure of capital to become successful.

So long story short, before automatically labeling any networking marketing, MLM, or direct selling business as being a scam, think about the job you currently have and ask yourself if you are the one stuck in the scam.

Improve your SEO by using a keyword in your posts

Possibly one of the most asked questions is how to improve your SEO rankings so that search engines like Google and Yahoo will find your blog.  Generally, if someone is using a search engine they probably aren’t going to go past the first 2 pages of results.  Therefore, it is your goal to make it to that first page of results.

While there are several tricks to optimizing your blog, one of the easiest ways is to simply use keywords in your title, and within your actual post.

But how do you choose keywords?  There are actually two tools I recommend for helping out with this.  One is Google Trends.  Search for a word and you can see what the search engine trend is for that word.  Look for something that has a fairly steady or increasing trend.

The 2nd tool I recommend is the Google AdWords Keyword Tool.  Here you can search for multiple words and phrases.  When you search, you will get back a list of those items you had entered, along with several other recommendations.  From here, it becomes a simple process of looking at the ‘Global Monthly Searches’ column in the results.  The higher the number, the more often that word or term was searched.

Now, there is another column you can take a look at in these results and that is the “Competition” column.  This tells you how many other sites you are competing with.  So if you choose a word with a fairly high search total and lower competition, odds are you will be able to get a higher hit ratio on the search engines.

One last thing I want to leave you with.  If you are using WordPress for your blogging, there is a widget you should consider installing:  the All in One SEO Pack.  This will allow you to enter keywords into the widget for your post.  That combined with the keywords you are using in your actual post will only help out with your SEO ranking.

Top 7 Methods For Expanding Your MLM Business

So what does work? Here are the top methods I’ve discovered, in no particular order.

  1. Blogging.  I would recommend setting up a account.  This allows you to choose your own domain name, and the surf engines tend to find it easier.  If you want to setup your own domain, I would recommend using HostGator to host your site.  There is a banner button to the right for your benefit.  Their service is top-notch and prices are low.  There is also a link at the bottom of the page for a special GoDaddy price, once you have decided upon a URL name.  Getting your WordPress setup is a fairly simple process, and finding instructions online is easy enough.  If you have no idea of what you’re doing, I would suggest the video tour package at to help you out.  I believe she sells it for around $200, but if you don’t know what you are doing, it’s well worth it.  Once you are setup and ready to begin blogging, remember that you do NOT want to promote your personal opportunity directly.  Instead, you want to simply provide beneficial information.  In order to have people come back to your site, or sign up for your RSS feed, you’ll want to always create posts about things which will provide benefit to your readers.  Once they sign up via your opt-in form then you can work with them by using your autoresponder.
  2. Use An Opt In Form.  This is a simple form designed to capture the name and email address of your readers.  If you go out to an autoresponder site, such as AWeber (there is a banner ad to the right towards the bottom) they will provide templates of various opt in forms for you to select from.  Then it’s just a matter of putting the code into your site.  You will want to offer the reader some type of a reward for signing up on your site:  a free video, an ebook, etc.  Then, setup your autoresponder to send out a welcome email to your readers when they sign up.  Make sure you include instructions on how to get the free gift you promised them.  Setup a few more emails to get sent out at various time frames to make sure they are finding everything they need.  Eventually, you can begin to include emails about your opportunity.
  3. Find a mentor.  To make sure you are getting the biggest bang for your buck, see if you can find a successful individual or maybe a group which meets on  a regular basis.  Sometimes, your upline is not the way you want to go, as the advice they give is usually to hand out material, follow-up, and invite.  However, you are attempting to use the internet to your advantage here.  So it is important that you find someone who is both experienced and successful so you can duplicate what they are doing.  You can use to find groups which may be meeting in your area.
  4. Write Articles.  This follows along with the same principles as your blog posts.  Make sure when you write your articles, that you are providing benefit to anyone who finds your article.  You want the piece to be informative because at this point what you are trying to do is brand yourself as an expert.  Also, make sure you include a link back to your primary blog in the ‘About the Author’ box of your article.  If someone enjoys your article, they may visit your blog and become a member.  I would recommend using for your article submission.
  5. Social Media.  If you are not one of the millions of people on Facebook, what are you waiting for?  Facebook is changing the way people do business.  But don’t stop there.  Also sign up for Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, and any other sites you can find.  Then start adding friends and building a network.  Why?  Because here is what you want to do.  When you put out a new post on your blog, you’re going to want to let people know about it.  Broadcasting it on the various social media platforms is perfect because it amounts to free advertising.  Plus, if people like what the read, they may share it with their friends and hopefully it ends up going viral.  StumbleUpon is really good for this and I would recommend you join.
  6. Record a video:  Remember, your goal is to brand yourself.  You want others to see and recognize you when they are on the net.  What’s more, you want to brand yourself as an expert.  So when someone sees you on the web, they’re going to associate your face with being a go-to person.  Someone they would like to work with.  And that’s exactly what you are after.  You can use Windows to edit your video if need be.  And if you would like to use a teleprompter when recording, you can download some free software which will turn your laptop into a prompter.  I would recommend doing that, as your videos will look more professional.  Once your video is done, drop it onto your blog.
  7. Broadcast yourself.  OK, so you’ve got everything setup and you’re making posts.  You’ve signed up for about 30 social media websites like Twitter and Facebook.  But it’s taking you FOREVER to post to all these sites.  There’s an easier way.  You should signup for both Ping.FM and  What these services do is allow you to link all of your accounts in one location.  Then simply putting out a post within, say, Ping.FM will then post to ALL of your websites you have setup!  One easy post.  Quite a time saver.

Robert Kiyosaki Explains Why a Home Business Is The Perfect Business

Network marketing has gotten a bad rep over the years. Often looked upon as a “pyramid scheme”. Or maybe you’ve heard it described as a “get rich quick scheme”. Granted, there are bad companies out there, but that’s not a reason to lump all network marketing businesses into the same group.

Maybe you are tired of working at a 9-5 job. Perhaps you don’t feel as though your job is very secure. Or maybe you are one of the millions of unemployed individuals out there, already a victim of the recession and corporate cost cutting. In any case, you may want to read Robert Kiyosaki’s book, “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”. This is going to give you a start to getting out of the rat race.

The concept of the book is this. Mr. Kiyosaki’s father believed in going to school, getting a good job with benefits, and saving for retirement. He referred to him as his “Poor Dad”. Now, his friend’s father was a very wealthy individual, who he called his “Rich Dad”. And, his Rich Dad could not understand why anyone would want a job rather than starting their own business.

His Rich Dad developed a simple chart called the Cash Flow Quadrant, shown here:

As you can see, on the left side of the quadrant are ‘E’ and ‘S’ people. These are employees (‘E’) and the Self Employed (‘S’). The people on this side of the quadrant will rarely become rich because they are spending their time working for someone else to get a paycheck. However, on the right side of the quadrant are ‘B’ and ‘I’ people. These are the wealthy employers. A business owner (‘B’) starts their own business, but leverages their time by having others work in the business for them. And then there is the investor (‘I’) who leverages both their time and money by investing…letting their money work for them.

In this video, Mr. Kiyosaki explains why network marketing is the “Perfect Business” because it allows someone to own their own business and leverage their time and money for a very nominal start-up fee. You can also find the video on the Home Business Videos page found along the top.
