How To Find The Best WordPress Themes

If you have a blog or webpage, you want to get noticed.  It’s one of the keys to home business success.  I’ve discussed how to attract readers and keep them on your site and using YouTube to brand yourself in your pages.  But just as important is choosing a WordPress theme design for your site.  Specifically in my case, an eye-catching WordPress theme.

As I’ve discussed in the past, you have about 3-5 seconds to get the readers attention and keep them on your site.  Many web surfers have the attention span of a 3-year old, so you need to make an instant impression so they want to continue looking at the rest of the site.

To date, the most common question I have been asked on this site is, “Where did you get your theme?”.  I love getting asked that question because it tells me I’ve chosen something that generates enough interest to keep people around and want to look further.

So before I go any further…the wordpress theme I use is called “Business Corp”.  When I was first developing this blog, I wanted to choose a theme which related to the subject matter I was going to write about AND have a nice appearance.  Doing a Google search on ‘WordPress themes’ will give you plenty of results to choose from.  I ended up finding this theme on, and they have other great themes to choose from.

When you first start-up a blog or website, you need to envision what it is you want your site to look like.  Get a rough idea in your head, and then just start looking around until you find something that catches your eye.  But don’t stop there…keep looking.  You may find something even better.

Personally, I had narrowed it down to 4 or 5 themes before finally selecting this one.  And it came down to not only how it looked, but what features were included in the theme.  This particular one makes it very easy to insert affiliate ads in the right-side box, and adding items such as Google analytics or banners in the header or footer just as easy.  Terrific options and features, combined with plug-ins have helped make this site what it is.

Another theme site I had found during my search was this one, which has some very good themes as well.  But again, it just comes down to what you are looking for and how much you are willing to search for that one special theme.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Taking a brief break from the home business posts to briefly talk about another important topic.  This month is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  As someone who has lost a dear friend of mine to breast cancer, it’s a subject that hits home for me.  And I’m sure it does the same for a good number of you as well.

Generally, I do not promote my other blog, as I like to keep these separate.  However, this is a unique case and my goal is to get this information out to as many people as possible.  More and more studies are coming out showing supplements can decrease the risk of breast cancer.  Even Dr. Christine Northrup recommends supplements as a preventative measure.

Quick Tip: How To Manage Your Home Business

You’ve managed to find a legitimate home based business, one you think you can have success with.  But you need to remember, this is still a business.  And in order to have home business success, you need to manage your home business well.

Home business management is one of the most ignored aspects of running a successful home business.  And there are multiple aspects.  I have already covered one of these aspects in a previous post, concerning how important it is to budget for your home business.

There is also the need to track your expenses and your income.  It is absolutely necessary to know how much you are putting into your business and how much you are getting out of it.  Otherwise, how will you ever know if you are making your home business profitable?  There is also the matter of knowing what your expenses are so you can deduct them at tax time.  I would recommend Sandy Botkin’s tax books related specifically to home businesses.

You are also going to need an efficient way to keep track of your contacts.  For without contacts, it becomes fairly difficult to actually build a home business.  Having the ability to store contact information so you can keep in touch with them via email or phone calls is a terrific method for generating sales and repeat business.  Of course, contact management varies from business to business, but even affiliate businesses need to keep track of their contacts, prospects, and associates to ensure they are receiving the assistance they need.

A final component you may want to keep track of are the actual products you are selling or promoting.  What are your best selling products?  Do you need to continue to promote these popular products?  What about your under-performers?  Do you need to promote these more and get them up-to-speed?

How To Use Movie Making Software For Your Business

You have probably noticed a massive increase in the number of homemade videos and movies on the internet.  But how do you use movie making software to achieve home business success?

There are several reasons to use movie making software for your home business.  Taking a look at my homepage, various video posts I have made, or even my online video presentation you can see examples of my own home videos.  These are used to help brand myself, allowing viewers to identify with me and realize there’s actually a human out there writing blogs or presenting business opportunities.

Then there are the “presentation movies” you sometimes see out on various home business websites or YouTube, like this one I made.  These can be created quickly, do not require a video camera, and can present information in an interesting way.  Remember, you your readers/viewers interested so they stay on your site.  And, of course, there are screen presentation videos.  These are usually “How To” videos where the presenter actually records what they are doing on their screen so viewers can see firsthand how to do something.

Which brings us to the video I’ve recorded for you below.  I personally use Windows Movie Maker to edit my videos and create my movies.  This may be old hat for certain individuals out there with a home business.  But I know for a fact there are many others out there who have no idea how to edit their videos, create movies, or upload them to YouTube.  And because I try to present information to those who are experienced home business owners, those who are looking for a home business, and everyone in-between, I felt this was something that would be beneficial.

Top 5 Reasons Public Speaking Can Improve Your MLM Home Business

When it comes to public speaking, there are two types of people.  Those who are extremely comfortable with it, and those who would rather sit through a 2hr root canal without novocaine.  Essentially, you either enjoy it or you don’t.  That’s not to say you aren’t good at public speaking, you would simply rather not do it.  But can public speaking help your home business?

Contrary to popular belief, good public speakers are not born with that ability.  Anyone can learn how to be a successful public speaker.  If public speaking was a born trait, then babies would come out reciting the Gettysburg Address.  Like anything else, it just takes practice.

I think public speaking can be an incredibly useful method to promote your home business.  So how and why would you use public speaking to promote your home business?  Here are the top reasons:

  1. Many times, it’s free.  I’d be willing to wager, depending upon your business or service, if you asked around town you could find places who would be interested in having you come in to speak.  Your local library, community center, gyms, or local businesses may be interested in having you speak as a benefit to their employees and/or customers.  As long as you are providing good content, and not just promoting your particular business.  You won’t receive any payment for speaking, but instead it breaks down to free advertising.
  2. It is a terrific way to brand yourself.  Branding yourself is all about publicizing you as an expert in your area.  Now, that consists of two parts:  people recognizing your name and face, and then being able to associate it with your expertise in a particular area.  Generally, when people listen to someone speak in a public setting, they are going to be more receptive to what you have to say.  They are also going to associate you as an expert in your area, and will seek you out when they have questions or require products and services you provide.
  3. The place hosting your speech will sometimes help with promotion.  Sure, you’re going to want to do some promotion yourself, but depending upon where you are speaking, you may get quite a bit of help with promoting your event.  Now, if you are speaking at a hotel, not only will you need to pay for the room, but you will need to handle all of the promotion as well.  If you speak at a health fair or business expo, you will usually need to pay for that right, but you’ll receive some promotion as well.  But let’s say you speak at your local library.  Not only do you stand a good chance of being able to do it for free, but they will probably promote the event on their website and in fliers.
  4. You have the opportunity to present to a number of people at one time.  It’s a very efficient method of promoting yourself and your business.  Let’s say you get a chance to speak at your library and 30 people show up for the event.  Following your presentation, several people come up to you, thanking you for the information and asking if they can get more.  Again, people are seeking you out now, not the other way around.
  5. It’s flexible.  Not only is public speaking a powerful technique for promoting your business, but it is also flexible.  Many times, you will be able to arrange speaking engagements around your schedule.  However, there will be times when only certain dates and/or times are available, and you need to take what you can get.  In addition, you may be able to schedule reoccurring engagements.  While it’s true that this would take away from the flexibility, if you can manage to reach an agreement where upon you end up speaking every Sat or every-other Fri night for the next month or two, it becomes an incredible opportunity.  Because now those individuals who listen to you speak the first time have a chance to tell others about you.  And if all goes well, the word spreads and you end up more people at every event.

So looking at the top 5 here, you need to ask yourself whether or not public speaking as a promotional tool is worthwhile to you.  If you are one of those people who enjoy speaking, maybe this is something that has never occurred to you.  And if you’re one of those people who hates public speaking, perhaps this has given you enough reason to look into it a little further and at least give it some consideration.

Online Presentations For Home Business Success

No matter what your business is, at some point you may need to do a presentation for a prospect.  It could be geared towards showing your prospect why your products or services are worthwhile purchasing.  Or perhaps you are showing the advantages of your specific business opportunity.

Normally you would want to meet with your prospect in person.  Obviously, it’s more personable and you come off as being professional.  And if your particular business opportunity hosts weekly or monthly “hotel” meetings, these too can be advantageous.

But what if your prospect doesn’t live near by?  With today’s marketing techniques and using the internet and social media, the chances of your prospect being in another city, state, or even country are higher than in years past.  So if your prospect is a thousand miles away, how can you do a presentation for them and still have it come off as both personable and professional?

Some home businesses have recognized this trend and now host daily or weekly conference calls or web meetings.  Now, a web meeting (in my opinion) comes off as being more professional than a conference call because there’s usually some type of video or slide presentation.  But even though it’s professional, you’re still missing that personable element.  I’m not saying these are a waste of time.  Just the opposite actually.

These are terrific ways to invite individuals who happen to find a video or website of yours.  But, if you have been directly working with a prospect and you’ve spent the time creating a relationship with that prospect.  If you’ve established yourself as an expert in your specific area, and that prospect trusts you.  Then you are going to want to do a presentation directly with that prospect, and bypass the “company” web meeting.  But your prospect is in another part of the country.  How can you do a personable and professional presentation for them?

Well, you could hop on a plane and fly to their location.  It would certainly make quite an impression.  But I have another, cheaper, option for you.  Why not do a web presentation on your own?  Your company may be doing larger scale ones now, but there’s nothing preventing yourself from hosting your own presentations.

The most popular software out there is probably GoToMeeting.  It’s a great piece of software which gives you the ability to send out invites to prospects with a web link.  Clicking on that link brings them into the meeting.  On the hosting end, all you need to do is create some type of presentation and share your desktop.  Once you do that, others in the virtual meeting room can see whatever is on your desktop.  The disadvantage here is that there is a cost to it, though it’s fairly reasonable.

But, the intent of this post was to show you FREE ways to present to your prospects.  Allow me to introduce to you, Microsoft SharedView.  If you have used Live Meeting in the past, this has replaced it.  Though I believe Live Meeting is still available.  Again, this allows you to send out invites to prospects with a particular link they can click on.  When they do so, they’ll enter the virtual meeting room and at that point, you can share your desktop and do your presentation.  Anyone in the room will be able to see the presentation and there’s an option to have voice as well.  Plus, it’s a free download.  The only disadvantage is in order for your prospects to view your presentation, they will need to download and install the software themselves.

Now it’s up to you how you do your presentation.  You could show a video, create a PowerPoint presentation, or walk them through a website.  Whatever you feel is best for what you are doing.

But not only are these personable and professional, they can become time savers as well.  Let’s say you have 6 prospects and 2 friends who are interested in your opportunity.  You could spend 30min with each of them doing a presentation for a total of 4hrs.  Or, you could invite all 8 of them to one of your presentations, in which case you take care of all 8 in 30min.

When you have inexpensive or free methods of doing web presentations for prospects, you can further brand yourself as an expert in your area.  And as your reputation grows, so will your conversion rates:  from prospect to customer or team member.

Just wanted to take a few moments to deviate away from the normal posts here and give a quick review on a tool which I’ve been using for a few weeks now.  Why?  For a couple of reason.  First, it WILL drive traffic to your site.  Not “it can drive traffic” or “it might drive traffic”.  If you do it, you will get hits to your site.  Second, just that little gem might be enough, but there are other benefits which I will outline below.   So I feel it’s worthwhile.  And third, it’s FREE.  And getting free traffic is always a good thing. is…well…a link referral site.  But it differs from others I’ve seen out there.  As I said, it’s free to sign-up.  Once you’re in, you submit your website and choose from one of their categories/subcategories your website pertains to.  It will then be listed there.  If you have multiple websites to promote, you’ll have to register multiple times…once for each website.

As soon as you have your website listed, you’ll be ranked within that category.  Let’s say there are 2000 other websites listed in the same category.  You might be in position 1,698.  But here’s where it starts to get interesting.  You can improve your position, even moving it to the first page.  And it doesn’t take any money to do so.  Just a little bit of time.

All you need to do is visit other members websites which are listed in the directory.  Doesn’t really matter what category.  Usually with the referral sites I have seen, you need to visit a certain number of websites to get some sort of benefit.  That usually translates into people just bouncing to your site simply to get credit for doing so, and not really looking at your site.  But this site is a little different.

If you actually want your ranking to increase, you need to visit 30 other sites, but you ALSO need to review 5 of those sites.  And your review needs to be more than simply writing, “Nice site”.  They do check the reviews and will disallow generic reviews like that.  And lastly, you need to post something in one of their forum topics on the site.  This creates an environment where people actually interact with each other.  Simply by performing these 3 things, you can bump your website up the rankings very quickly.  Or even to the very top, as I have done a couple times.  You can also add someone’s site to your favorites which also bumps your ranking a little.

So #1, you’re getting your website listed in a directory.  And #2, it’s a very simple process to increase your ranking within the site by just spending a little time looking at and reviewing some other sites.  Why is this important to you?  Well, you’re getting free traffic first and foremost because other members are also trying to increase their rankings and will visit your site.  But in the process, you are also having people review your site.  Sometimes you’ll get generic reviews, but generally the reviews can be very helpful.  Maybe there’s a way to improve your site which you haven’t thought of, but someone makes a good suggestion in a review.

In addition, as you are reviewing other sites, you are exposed to other ideas which you might be able to incorporate into your site.  So as you can see, there’s an opportunity to not only get free traffic driven to your site, but also a chance to improve upon your site.

If you are not much for spending your time surfing, they have some other options.  You could spend $35/month and always be ranked towards the top without having to visit other sites.  And, people will still review your site.  There are also other advertising methods one can employ at very reasonable prices.  There’s even an option where you can earn money for referrals your site brings in.

All-in-all, if you’re looking at a quick and easy way to drive traffic, then I’d recommend this site to you.  I’ve already seen my traffic increase, pingbacks have increased, and people have bookmarked my site.  And I’m just using the free service.  So if you’re interested in it, you can visit their site by clicking on the ad banner over on the right or just go out to…as I said, I’m not participating in their affiliate program at this time, so it’s not like I’m benefiting from sending people out there.  I just wanted to mention the site b/c I think it could be beneficial.

Network Marketing Leads – Old School vs. New School

Raise your hand if you’re in a network marketing business.  Go ahead…no one is looking.  OK, now if these methods of generating network marketing leads for your business sound familiar, keep your hand up:

  1. Write a list of all your friends and family
  2. Call those people and tell them about this wonderful opportunity you just got involved with
  3. Start a conversation with people you meet when you’re out, and bring up your business
  4. Hand out literature, videos, CDs, etc to prospects and follow-up with them
  5. Invite people to business meetings/conference calls/webinars

Still have your hand up?  Just a few months ago, I would have been in the same boat.  These techniques (and these aren’t all of them) are what I refer to as “Old School Network Marketing”.  Odds are you went through some type of network marketing training regarding your particular business, and this was probably THE network marketing system you were told to use.  Why?  Because others have used it and it was successful for them.  Others can learn how to do it, so it’s easy to teach.  It just works.  Well…is it working for you?

You see, this actually WAS the primary technique before the internet.  Network marketing is just that…networking with people, finding what they need or want, and then showing how you can help them get that need or want.  And to do that, you needed to get out there and talk to people:  family, friends, strangers, your neighbor’s dog…whatever.

Can people learn to use these techniques efficiently and create an extremely profitable businesses?  Absolutely.  Can everyone?  Possibly.  Will everyone?  No.  Let me give you an example.  Will some people who play basketball go on to play in the NBA?  Absolutely.  Will everyone?  Even if you attend camps, watch training videos, and practice night and day?  No.  Does that mean you completely quit playing basketball?  Probably not.  So what do you do?  Instead of the NBA, maybe you just keep playing in a rec league or just pick-up games with friends on the weekend.  The point is, you still play basketball.  You find an area you are comfortable with, you learn how to do it better, and you run with it.

That’s where the New School of network marketing comes in.  Thankfully for all of us, Al Gore created the internet.  So how can that help you?  I’ll give you two ways.

First, you are obviously already comfortable with the internet.  Otherwise you wouldn’t have found this post.  Isn’t that were you want to be?  In your comfort zone?  Let’s face it, while it is possible for everyone to become great traditional network marketers, many people just don’t have it in them.  Maybe they’re shy or don’t have a large circle of friends and family.  However, using the internet comes easier.  Maybe that same person is on Facebook and has no problem adding friends and carrying on conversations.  Why?  Because they’re in their comfort zone.

Second, it comes down to numbers.  Let’s say you’ve signed up for a home business, but you’re still working an 8-5 job.  Then you come home, have dinner with the family, play with the kids, etc.  Before you know it, it’s already 9pm.  Doesn’t give you much time to “meet” people.  But let’s say you manage to talk to some family and friends.  What if they say “no”?  Then they get scratched off the list and you move on.  But eventually you’re going to run out of people in your warm market.  Then you’re down to trying to speak to strangers when you go shopping or out to eat.  Or even get desperate enough to buy leads (don’t do that…ever).  You may only be talking to two people/week.  Often times, you don’t talk to anyone.

But here is where the beauty of the internet comes in.    You can spend 30min writing a blog or article and posting it to Facebook.  You could spend 5min shooting a video and posting that to YouTube and Facebook.  You could even spend 30sec just posting on Facebook and including a link.  Now instead of finding time to chase people down to talk about your business, you instead spend a little time and turn the tables.  People chase you down.  That’s right, instead of looking for leads to call, the leads look for you.

If you are posting good content, honestly trying to help people by fulfilling a want or need, it’s going to take a fraction of the time to reach many more people.  Your post is seen by all your friends on Facebook.  And if someone likes what they see, maybe they share it with their friends.  And so on, and so on.  You could reach thousands of people just from a single 5min video.  How long would it take you to reach a couple thousand people using traditional methods?

Am I saying to completely stop using traditional methods?  No.  I’m simply suggesting another comfort zone which may be easier and more efficient for you.  Another tool in your toolbox, so to speak.  Even if you go the internet route, eventually you are still going to need to speak with people.  You’re simply being more efficient with your prospecting.

Why You Should Be Using A Keyword Selector Tool

It’s the Holy Grail of bloggers and webmasters:  Obtaining the #1 spot on a Google search.  When someone searches for something like ‘Home Business’, you want YOUR website to be at the top of the list because that equates to A LOT of traffic to your site.  Even making it on the 1st page will result in quite a bit of traffic.  Generally, people don’t go any further than 3 pages before they revise their search criteria, so you can see why it’s so sought after.

So how can you improve your odds of getting to that coveted 1st page…or even the #1 spot?  By using search engine keywords.  But not just any keywords…it takes a little bit of research to determine the right path to take.  And that’s where this post comes in.  This may be old news for some of the more experienced individuals out there, but my mission is to provide valuable information to both experienced individuals, as well as those who are just starting out.

Let’s say you have a blog and you want to improve your odds for getting listed on the 1st page for a certain topic.  To make this more realistic, I’m going to use this exact post as an example so you can actually see what’s going on.

The first thing you are going to want to do is to make sure your title contains 1-2 keywords, or a keyword-phrase.  This is the first step.  So how do we choose the right search engine keywords?  There is a tool you may or may not know about called Google Adwords Keyword Tool.  This is a great tool to use when you are trying to figure out what search engine keywords to use.

Using it is an extremely simple process.  Click on the link above to get to the site.  Once out there, all you need to do is enter a couple words or phrases which relate to the topic you are writing about.  In this example, I’m writing about keywords…so I entered ‘keywords’ and ‘adwords’.  Then just click on the Search button and it will return several pages of related words and phrases which have had searches recently.

That’s the first decision you need to make…what to search on.  Once you have the list, the next big decision comes up:  what to use.  You might think that if I’m posting an article on keywords, that’s what I would want to use in my title, right?  Not necessarily.  You need to take a look at the three columns returned for each word/phrase:  Global Monthly Searches, Local Monthly Searches, and Local Search Trends.  This data is going to lead you in the right direction.

Looking at the Global Monthly Searches column for “keywords”, I see that it has over 1.2 million searches.  Wow…that sounds good.  Think of all the traffic I’ll get.  But here’s the problem.  There may be a ton of searches being done on that word, but there may also be a ton of other more popular websites using that same word.  And their Google ranking is going to be higher than mine.  Which means, I’m probably not going to make it on the first page.

The secret here is to not be greedy.  When you are first starting out, your site probably doesn’t have much traffic.  So what you will want to do is look for a keyword or phrase which is somewhere in the 4,000-8,000 Global Monthly Searches range.  But don’t stop there…you also need to look at the Competition meter and pick something which doesn’t have much competition.  Less competition + low monthly searches = better odds that you’ll get placed on the first page.  Will you get millions of hits?  Probably not…at least not right away.  But the secret is, you want to start out slow.  Start building a base, and if you are providing good content, people will come back and will pass your site on to others interested in the same subject matter.

The other item you can look at is the Trends column.  This tells you how that particular word or phrase is trending.  Perhaps it is becoming a hot topic and is beginning to trend upwards, but the competition is fairly low.  That’s the money shot.  Going back to our example, if you take a look at my title you’ll notice I opted to use the term “Keyword Selector Tool” within the title.  If you do a search on that term, you’ll see the monthly searches is almost 10,000…a little on the higher side, but still acceptable.  The competition is a little less than half and the trend, while on the lower side, is holding steady.

Once you have determined what keywords or phrases to use in your title, you have the 1st step complete.  But we’re not through yet.  You can use the same tool and technique to find other relevant words and phrases to use throughout the body of your post.  You don’t need to spend hours upon hours trying to figure out the very best words to use in your body, just pick a few to focus on.

The final part of the equation is the description of your blog.  If you are using WordPress, you should install the All In One SEO Pack and utilize this to the full extent.  Here, you plug in the title of your post and then a description of it.  This is where you should add in some more of your keywords.  After the description, you can actually enter a few specific keywords related to your post.  When you publish your post, the title, description, and keywords are submitted to the search engines.  Likewise, if you are writing an online article, the technique is the same.  But remember, do NOT overuse keywords.  It’s best to limit yourself to 5 or 6 main items to focus on.  One of those keywords should always be your name.  Remember, you also want to brand yourself at the same time.
